How to Have AI Book a Restaurant Reservation in a Single Message

A single paper message bubble connected by a sweeping ribbon to a miniature restaurant table with two place settings, a confirmed reservation card and a small clock.

The steps below are taken from each vendor’s help pages. We have not run them.

The simplest way to have AI book a table is to send one message with the party size, date, time and area. You can send it to OpenAssistant by text, email or its dashboard, or use ChatGPT or Gemini, which plug straight into reservation systems such as OpenTable, Resy and Yelp. This guide walks through:

Before you start

Have these ready, because every tool asks for them:

Some restaurants ask for a credit card to hold a table. ChatGPT and Gemini don’t take card details; ChatGPT sends you to OpenTable for card holds. The other tools’ docs don’t say.

Option 1: OpenAssistant (send one message, keep the rest in one place)

OpenAssistant’s homepage says its assistant “browses websites on your behalf to book travel, make reservations, and get things done online.” (OpenAssistant) Its executive assistant page says it works in the tools you already use and browses sites on your behalf when there is no integration. (OpenAssistant)

Steps

  1. Set up once. Connect your calendar during onboarding (it is required), and optionally contacts. (OpenAssistant)
  2. Save your dining habits. Contacts can hold notes such as “Whenever we meet in person, schedule us at the Coffee Bean in Boston,” which the assistant uses when it schedules. (OpenAssistant)
  3. Send the request by text, email or a dashboard task, with party size, date, time window, area, cuisine, budget and dietary needs. (OpenAssistant)
  4. Let it find the place. Google Maps is available to every assistant, for things like finding a venue near someone or estimating travel time. (OpenAssistant)
  5. Stay in control. Set autonomy to Manual if you want to approve actions before they happen. (OpenAssistant) Requests from every channel show up in the dashboard, where you can answer questions and approve actions.

Where others do better: ChatGPT and Gemini document step-by-step flows with OpenTable, Resy and Yelp, and OpenAssistant’s help center does not yet have restaurant steps. The free Starter plan includes 1,000 credits at signup, plus 100 bonus credits a day once those are used up, up to 1,000 a month. (OpenAssistant pricing)

Option 2: ChatGPT (reserve in the chat)

Who can use it

OpenAI says restaurant reservations work on eligible consumer plans on web, mobile and desktop when using GPT-5.6 Sol or GPT-5.6 Luna. They are not available in ChatGPT Work, on Business, Enterprise or Edu plans, or in voice conversations. Coverage: OpenTable worldwide, Resy in the US, Yelp in the US and Canada, varying by restaurant. (OpenAI)

Steps

  1. In a regular chat, ask for a restaurant with the date, time and party size. Add cuisine, budget or dietary needs if they matter.
  2. Review the restaurants and times it shows.
  3. Select a restaurant, or Reserve where it appears.
  4. Confirm the details and complete the booking.

(OpenAI)

Example request (ours): “Table for 4 this Friday between 7 and 8 PM in the Mission, San Francisco. Mexican or Peruvian, under $50 a person, one vegetarian.”

What to expect

(OpenAI)

If you’re in ChatGPT Work, the Reserve option isn’t there. Work can try the restaurant’s website through its cloud browser instead (paid plans, not Free or Go), and asks you to confirm before confirming a booking. (OpenAI)

Option 3: Gemini with OpenTable (book and cancel)

Who can use it

18 or older, in the UK or US, with a personal Google Account (not work or school) and Keep Activity turned on. English only, in the Gemini mobile app or at gemini.google.com, and not in Gems or Gemini Live. (Google)

Steps

  1. Open the Gemini app or go to gemini.google.com.
  2. Ask it to find and book a restaurant. Mentioning OpenTable, or typing @OpenTable, helps.
  3. If OpenTable isn’t connected yet, Gemini offers to connect it.
  4. Follow the on-screen steps.

(Google)

If your calendar is connected, Gemini can check your schedule before it books. It can check availability, book, cancel and look up your existing reservations. It can’t modify a booking (it gives you a link to OpenTable instead), take payments, show reviews or read menus. (Google)

To disconnect OpenTable later: on gemini.google.com, open Customize in the sidebar, then Connectors, find the app, and choose More options, then Disconnect. (Google)

Google’s page doesn’t describe what the confirmation step looks like before the booking goes through.

Option 4: Google AI Mode (search many restaurants, then book)

AI Mode in Google Search can check availability across several restaurants for you. It may call businesses when details aren’t online; Google doesn’t say whether that covers restaurant reservations.

  1. Open the Google app and tap AI Mode, or go to google.com/ai.
  2. Type your request in the Ask anything bar. Google’s example: “Reservation for 6 on Friday with vegetarian options.”
  3. Select Check for me.
  4. Answer any follow-up questions.
  5. Review the request, tick the box if you want an email summary, and select Looks good.

(Google)

Results from the web come back in a few minutes; if Google calls restaurants, up to 30 minutes. Type “don’t call” if you don’t want calls made. Select Stop to end the search. (Google)

Google’s help page doesn’t say whether AI Mode completes a restaurant booking itself or hands you to the restaurant’s booking site.

Availability: Google’s help page lists dining reservations for the US, UK, Canada, Australia, India, Singapore, New Zealand, South Africa, Hong Kong and a few others, in English (and Hindi). (Google) An older Google Labs page still describes this as a US experiment for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, so what you see may vary. (Google)

If you have a Pixel 11 in the US with a Google AI subscription, Gemini’s Call for me can also phone a restaurant and book by voice. See our guide to having AI make a phone call. (Google)

Start with OpenAssistant if you want to text one assistant and have bookings sit alongside your calendar and contacts. For documented one-tap flows with OpenTable, Resy or Yelp, ChatGPT and Gemini are the most direct. Pick Gemini if you want to cancel from the same place you booked. Use AI Mode when you want to compare lots of places at once.

Check it yourself

This section is advice for you. We have not run these checks.

Use the same request in each tool: “Table for 4, Saturday, 7 to 8 PM, [your neighborhood], Italian, one gluten-free diner.” Check:

  1. Did it end with a confirmation from the restaurant or provider?
  2. Was the time inside your window and the party size right?
  3. How many taps or messages did it take?
  4. Could you cancel without leaving the tool?

FAQ

Can AI book a restaurant table for me?

Yes. ChatGPT can reserve through OpenTable, Resy and Yelp, Gemini can book and cancel through OpenTable, and OpenAssistant’s site says its assistant browses websites to make reservations.

Can the AI cancel or change a booking?

Gemini with OpenTable can cancel and look up your reservations, but it gives you a link to OpenTable to modify one. ChatGPT does not save, modify, cancel or display existing reservations, so you use the provider’s email or app.

Does the AI need my credit card?

ChatGPT and Gemini do not take card details. If an OpenTable or Yelp booking needs a card, ChatGPT sends you to OpenTable to finish.

What do I need to put in the request?

Party size, date and time, how flexible you are, area, cuisine, budget, dietary needs, and the name and email for the booking.

Is it booked as soon as I send the message?

With ChatGPT it is only booked when the provider confirms, and the confirmation email comes from OpenTable, Resy or Yelp.

Try OpenAssistant

If you would rather hand off the whole errand in one text, Try OpenAssistant. Save your usual spots in Contacts, send the request, and keep autonomy on Manual until you trust it. Plans are on the pricing page.
